Mason alum Griffith talks life in the Minors
|Many student-athletes crave the chance to pursue a professional playing career in their respective sports post-graduation, yet few ultimately adhere to that burning desire.
Shawn Griffith, however, did not shy away from the challenge and chose to chase his lifelong dream.
Griffith, a 2009 graduate from George Mason University, is a relief pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization. The 24-year-old St. Petersburg, Fla. native was selected in the 37th round in the 2009 Major League draft, one of six Mason graduates to get drafted that year.
Moton goes for 31 as women's hoops downs Georgia State in overtime
|When the women’s basketball team needed an answer, they knew right where to look.
As the clock winded down in overtime, Taleia Moton sank two free throws to give George Mason a 70-68 win at the Patriot Center Sunday afternoon over Georgia State. Moton ended the game with 31 points. The win comes on the 38th anniversary of Mason’s first ever win as a women’s basketball program and brings head coach Jeri Porter to within three wins of the 200 benchmark.

|Kenneth S. Ball has been chosen to succeed Lloyd Griffiths as dean of the Volgenau School of Engineering. This announcement follows the recent appointment of Thomas Prohaska, Ph.D., as dean of the College of Health and Human Services.
Lawsuit over Student Government secret ballots shot down
|A lawsuit filed over secret ballot voting in Mason Student Senate appointments was shot down by a Fairfax County judge over an error in who the complaint was filed against, according to a recent Broadside report.
Homecoming parade to return next year with expanded committee
|The Office of Student Involvement plans to bring back the annual Homecoming parade next year after its absence at this year’s festivities. Planning for next year’s parade will begin earlier and calls for a larger role from students than in previous years.
Sherrod Wright beats VCU at the buzzer
|There are 3.8 seconds left on the clock, the Patriots trailing by two. Ryan Pearson has the ball at the baseline looking for Bryon Allen, but he gets cut off. About to fall over the line, Pearson tosses with the ball to the only open target – Sherrod Wright.
Wright takes three dribbles. He pulls up for the jumper with a hand right in his face.
Swish. 62-61.
“I made the shot of my dreams,” Wright said.

February 14 goes by many names for students. For many, it's Valentine's Day. For some, it's Singles Awareness Day, Hallmark Day or V-Day. This year, for the Mason Nation, V-day might carry a whole new name: VCU Day.
‘Doc Nix’ embracing new role with faculty committee
|Michael Nickens, better known as “Doc Nix,” is most recognized for his presence at Mason basketball home games as director of the pep band, the “Green Machine.” This semester, Nickens is taking his knowledge from within the Mason’s School of Music to the Board of Visitors as a new faculty committee representative.
Nickens attended his first meeting as a faculty representative on Jan. 25 and said the environment was a shift from what he’s used to seeing at the Patriot Center.
