Student government prepares for spring elections
|Mason Student Government is preparing to hold its spring elections for student senate, president and vice president of the student body.
According to the student government website, “the Senate is responsible for passing all legislation brought before it, including resolutions that give statements on the opinions of the student body, and bills that provide funding for Student Government events and activities.”
Starting Monday, Feb. 18, packets to file for candidacy are available for students to pick up at the Office of Student Involvement.
Mason professor discusses the future of the Washington area economy
|The Washington metropolitan area’s economy is always changing, but one Mason professor has an idea of what it will look like in the future.
Stephen Fuller addressed the topic of the Washington area economy on Feb. 18 during his Vision Series lecture at the Arlington campus’ Founders Hall. Fuller is a Mason professor of public policy and director of the Center for Regional Analysis.
According to Fuller, the Washington area is the most politically complex U.S. metropolitan region, given that the area is comprised of 22 independent jurisdictions.

Spuhler Field, Field House renovations set in motion to break ground in late spring
|The West Campus Connector is not the only construction that will be taking place on George Mason University’s West Campus in the coming months. According to a Fairfax Campus advisory group meeting on Dec. 12, 2012, facility projects to renovate Spuhler Field, the baseball stadium, and the Field House, the intercollegiate sports complex, are set to begin in late spring.

Mason Votes receives award for political engagement

Mason Votes, the George Mason University’s student-run political awareness organization, will receive the Democracy Cup Award from the Campus Election Engagement Project. Mason was recognized as one of the top four campuses within Virginia higher education to "engage their campuses and communities in the 2012 election," according to a press release.
"The CEEP is a national organization that tries to educate college campuses and students about the importance of being involved in the democratic process," said Shane Smith, executive director of Mason Votes and senior at the university. "We relied on them for the grant money that we applied [for] and received in order to do the things that made us successful in the end."
Women’s lacrosse opens 2013 with 12-7 exhibition win against the Scotland national team
|Lacrosse is traditionally a spring sport, but with a game-time temperature of 29 degrees and winds gusting up to 20 miles per hour, the conditions at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax were anything but spring-like.
The George Mason University women’s lacrosse team opened their 2013 season on Sunday by playing host to the Scotland national team in an exhibition game.
