Possible Arson: Housing Cart Catches Fire

Connect2Mason learned of the fire through this TweetPhoto from freshman David Bier. Bier's tweet included "#gmu," a search term the site's editorial staff routinely watches.

Early Thursday morning a Cushman brand Housing cart caught on fire near Dominion Hall, causing approximately $7,000 in damages, said a police official.

At 4:23 a.m. last Thursday, the George Mason University Police Department was informed of a fire near Dominion. However, by the time the GMUPD and the City of Fairfax Fire Department arrived, the fire had been extinguished by Securitas officers, said Assistant Chief of the GMU Police George Ginovsky.

“Security officers from Securitas were on the scene and extinguishing the fire with fire extinguishers,” said Ginovsky. “The speculation from the [City of Fairfax] Fire Department is that someone threw a lit cigarette on the seat. It could be an accident, but we’re treating it as an arson.”

According to Ginovsky, security officers on scene were unable to obtain any security footage or witnesses, making it unlikely that the case will be solved.

Spring Preachin': 'Brother' Ross Jackson Speaks His Faith to Students

"Brother" Ross Jackson, a friend of "Brother" Micah Armstrong, preached his version of God's Word to a crowd of students outside the Johnson Center earlier today. (Jonathan Smith)
-------------------

UPDATED 6:36 p.m.

With spring in full bloom, students could be seen soaking up the sun, eating outside and listening to the bitter sounds of this spring’s first campus preacher.

Brother Ross Jackson came to George Mason University’s North Plaza today to preach to students about his personal relationship with God, and how he thinks other students can achieve salvation.

Jackson said he had never read the Bible until he was 25-years-old. He was then “saved” a year later, and now goes around to schools preaching what he considers God’s Word.

Like other preachers who have come to Mason, such as Brother Micah Armstrong–  with whom Jackson says he is friends with – Jackson discussed the prevalence of pre-martial sex on college campuses, as well as homosexuality. A self-proclaimed Christian, Jackson additionally touched on other non-Protestant religions such as Catholicism and Islam, questioning their validity.

Circus protesters claim GMU police injustice: Participants inhibited by barricades and police tape

Over the last two weeks, protesters have gathered around the Patriot Center to rally against the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for alleged animal cruelty of their circus animals. However, according to some protesters, George Mason University police have been unfairly targeting them and inhibiting their protests.

Through police barricades and caution tape, protesters claim that the Mason police force has been infringing on their right to protest by keeping them away from the public.

Parking Lot Closes: Housing Project to Add 600 Beds to Campus

The new housing unit, which is projected to open in August 2012, will add 600 beds to the Fairfax campus. Another parking lot will accompany the project, offsetting the lost parking spaces in the now-closed Lot I, where the construction will take place. (Rendering via George Mason University)

UPDATED 8:23 p.m.

Lot I, a surface lot, was recently closed to begin construction on the Northwest Housing VIIIA complex.

Students who previously parked in Lot I, which was used heavily by students living on campus, were given an option of getting a refund or parking at another location on campus.

“[People with Lot I permits] were all given a choice — either downgrade to a general lot permit and be refunded $115, [the] difference between [the] general lot and Lot I pass, or [a] free upgrade to the Rappahannock Deck reserved area, [which are] levels four [through] five,” said Director of Parking and Transportation Josh Cantor. “I think most have come in, but I think we still have a few stragglers. [It] seemed to be about a 50/50 split of which option people chose.”

UPDATED 11:07 a.m.

For some students, the idea of a menagerie of animals coming to George Mason University is not one that settles well with them. Beginning this past Thursday, the Patriot Center hosted The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The circus, which performs annually at Mason, will be here until Sunday, April 4. However, its opening day was met with protests from various local animal rights groups, including Mason’s own Animals Rights Collective.

At the demonstration, protesters gave out literature against the circus and animal cruelty, carried signs that read “Ringling Beats Animals” and wore body television screens, which featured videos from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization.

Michael Dupuy, a junior systems engineering major and member of the ARC said, “By hosting the Ringling Circus, [Mason is] directly supporting animal cruelty.”

Former Mr. and Ms. Mason Titles Replaced by Gender-Neutral ‘Mason Majesty’

This past Monday, Feb. 15, marked the first homecoming pageant in Mason history that won't crown a Mr. and Ms. Mason. Citing the university's diversity as the primary root of the change, the contest will crown one gender-neutral "Mason Majesty." Last year, Richard Malebranche, second from the left, was crowned Mr. Mason. Ryan Allen, center, also known by drag-queen name Reann Ballslee, was crowned Ms. Mason.

--------------------------------------

This year, not only will the homecoming queen be without a vagina — homecoming will be without a queen.

Starting this year, following last year’s crowning of drag queen Reann Balslee as Ms. Mason, homecoming will no longer have the Mr. and Ms. Mason competition, but will opt for just one winner, known as Mason Majesty.

“We, [being] Student Activities and Program Board, discussed that we wanted to be more inclusive to all persons on campus — no matter how they identify . . . [The removal of the Mr. and Ms. Mason competition] has been in discussion for years,” said Assistant Director of Programming in Student Activities Michelle Davis, noting that it was not brought about specifically because of a drag queen winning the Ms. Mason title last year.

It’s something nearly unheard of at George Mason University: two snow days in a row. Citing safety concerns and more projected inclement weather, and marking the second full snow day of the semester, Mason has decided to cancel classes on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

According to Press Secretary Daniel Walsch, safety was the main factor when it came to making the decision to close school.

“[The factors going into closing Tuesday were] the overall safety of the university, looking at parking conditions, the ability of people to get in and get out and the weather forecast,” said Walsch. “There is a prediction that we could get hit with another 10 to 20 inches of snow tomorrow.”
