Mason Day Gets Twitterized

Students participating in Mason Day this year will have a new tech-savvy way to participate in the annual festivities.

For the first time, Mason Day will be incorporating the social media micro-blogging website Twitter into the activities planned for Thursday.

Program Board will be hosting The Patriot Pursuit, which according to their website, “is an interactive Twitter-based game,” in which participants join together in groups and engage in particular tasks. Groups will then have a designated amount of time to complete said task and are awarded points which can be used to get prizes.

George Yanez, a web designer for Program Board and the mastermind behind the Patriot Pursuit, wanted to incorporate Twitter into Mason Day because Mason is becoming more and more Twitter-friendly.

“I wanted more people to use [Twitter] since more departments are using Twitter,” said Yanez. Departments such as Communication, English and even Mason Dining and Parking have Twitter accounts which students, faculty and staff can follow for up-to-the-minute updates.

According to Yanez, Patriot Pursuit, which will be going on from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, is a unique and interactive way to enjoy Mason Day.

“[Patriot Pursuit] is a task intensive game . . . It’s more of an interactive way to enjoy Mason Day,” said Yanez.

According to Yanez, as of today, only a few groups had had signed up to participate in Patriot Pursuit, but many more students had inquired about the rules and requirements to participate, such as having a cell phone with Twitter capabilities.
