|On Thursday night, Mason men’s soccer team survived the roulette of penalties for the second time in its last four games to defeat a strong College of William and Mary side in the first round of the NCAA tournament. With the teams locked at 2-2 after 110 minutes of play, it was the composure and accuracy of Julio Arjona, Zach Herstek, Wes Sever and Chase Miller from the penalty spot, as well as a pair of saves by Steffen Kraus in the frame of the goal, that made the difference and sent the Patriots through.

|The Mason men’s basketball team travels to New Rochelle, NY to take on Iona College at 2 p.m. today at Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels and Patriots (4-0) meet for the third time in program history, with Mason having won both previous meetings in a home-and-home series in 2003 and 2004.

|After defeating Virginia Commonwealth University in a dramatic 3-2 overtime win to advance to the final game of the Atlantic 10 Championship, and defeating St. Louis for the title, Mason men’s soccer team will now face another former conference rival – the College of William and Mary – in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Soccer Championship.
Email to Student Body Reveals Plans for Mason Inn
|On Monday afternoon, students received an email from President Cabrera about the decision to transform the Mason Inn, currently a luxury hotel located on campus, to a residential, dining, and instructional facility.
Since it’s opening in fall 2010, the Mason Inn has lost roughly $11 million. Based on the losses, President Cabrera formed a Mason Inn Task Force at the beginning of the semester to propose new business models that would make the hotel more profitable. After the official proposal was written for President Cabrera’s review, the task force and the President agreed that converting the hotel into a facility that would serve the student body and faculty directly would yield the best results.
Board of Visitors motions to alleviate military student issues
|As class registration season is in full swing, a motion recently passed by the university board of visitors has a new effect on registration for those in the military. The motion, which began with spring 2014 registration, gives priority class registration to all active duty military members, veterans, reservists and the Virginia National Guard. Mason’s Board of Visitors passed this motion in response to code 23-9.2:3-7 C, established by the Virginia General Assembly, which called for accommodations to be made for military service members due to the scheduling difficulties they face.
New integrative research facility to house CHHS
|The College of Health and Human Services will soon be housed in a new comprehensive building. The building, whose construction is set to begin in September 2014 on the Fairfax campus, will provide the foundations for a new health research facility that will contain classrooms, research labs and a community clinic.
Despite growing support for amnesty clause, student conduct policy remains unchanged
|Across the nation, some 240 universities implement a version of the Good Samaritan policy.
Mason, however, does not.
A Good Samaritan policy states a person shall be immune from punishment if they call 911 for someone else while they are intoxicated or high on an illegal substance.
“Amnesty policies can mean different things for many schools,” said Dr. David Anderson, director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Health at the university. “[But] a lot of campuses spend time developing this...The point is to avoid injury.”
Support to extend benefits to LGBTQ faculty, staff shown by administrators, students, staff
|In the months leading up to the November state elections, Mason’s faculty senate, president and student government spoke out about their desire to see health benefits extended fully to LGBTQ faculty and staff.
Under Virginia’s current constitution, Mason cannot extend health benefits to the partners and families of LGBTQ faculty and staff members because of how the commonwealth defines marriage.
State policies prohibit the university from using state money for practices that conflict with state law.
Mason men's basketball defeats Northern Iowa 76-70
|The Mason men’s basketball team defeated Northern Iowa 76-70 at home on Saturday at the Patriot Center. Sophomore Marko Gujanicic recorded his second double-double in two straight games as a starter, while Sherrod Wright tallied 23 points and Patrick Holloway, who started in place of injured point guard Bryon Allen, ended with 11 points respectively.
