Fine Arts Building to undergo renovations to meet influx of music and art students

To address a growing number of art and music students at Mason, the College of Visual and Performing Arts will be renovating the Fine Arts Building to address the lack of classrooms and practice space.

While construction is underway, classes will be moved to different buildings across campus.

“What we have done as a college is a lot of music classes have moved to the arts building,” said Dan Hobson, production manager for the College of Visual and Performing Arts. “We were able to house 75 percent of classes that were moved.”

GMU and the community prepare for construction of West Campus Connector

Recap of Summer 2012 at Mason

New President Ángel Cabrera & Rector Daniel Clemente

After Alan Merten’s 15-year tenure as president, a new face will greet students returning this fall as Ángel Cabrera takes the helm of the university.

The Board of Visitors announced the appointment of Cabrera in December but he did not start his new position until the beginning of July.

Cabrera, age 44, will replace Alan Merten who served as president since 1996.

Merten's impact felt in balance of academics and athletics

Attendees who attended a George Mason University men’s basketball game in the past would have most likely seen the Green Machine blasting the school’s fight song, the Patriot Platoon, cheering on their fellow classmates and, President Alan Merten, in his courtside seat, barking at the referees over a bad call and armed with a t-shirt launcher that resembles a bazooka.

When the basketball season begins this fall, however, the man who claims to have missed as few as five Mason basketball games in his career will be absent. The president of the university will be gone.
