The future of the WGMU stream
After getting permission to take the status of the WGMU broadcast system into my own hands, I went into the Johnson Center today with the intention of improving our stream to make it more accessible to everyone, on every operating system, without relying on the proprietary WMA format. (Also, I did a bit for the sound quality).
After some fiddling, I got an IceCast server running on our computer alongside the WMA stream. It broadcasts at 64kbps mono, which sounds equivalent to 128kbps stereo; a huge improvement over the 32kbps (16kbps per channel) we've got on the WMA stream.
We've got it running at the URL of http://129.174.79.65:8000/wgmu. No little domain name, since we've got it running on a PC. Unfortunately, the domain name is the smallest problem. It seems there's a problem establishing a connection between the PC and a computer off-campus; right now our high-quality stream can only be heard on the campus network. Someday we're going to have to get the server software running on an actual server, which is possible, but it's going to be tough. Maybe. I'll keep messing with it, and we might actually have this working next semester.
