GW sweeps Mason women's volleyball
Mason women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 at home on Sunday to George Washington. Mason played well in each set but ultimately did not do enough to avoid the sweep. Mason lost the first set 19-25, the second set 17-25, and the third set 22-25. The loss drops Mason’s record to 6-17 overall and 2-7 in Atlantic 10 conference play.
Mason was plagued by service errors in the first set. This put Mason behind early on and the team struggled to catch up. Each time Mason had a chance to close the gap a service error would give GW a point and the service back. Mason’s attacking percentage was low as they only had eleven kills while committing eight errors.
In the second set, Mason battled fiercely with GW until ultimately losing 25-17. The teams were knotted up at 14 when GW went on an 11-3 run to close out the set. The Patriots’ attacking percentage worsened to a .028, and were only able to get ten kills against their nine errors committed. GW only committed five errors, which played a big role in GW pulling away at the end.
The last set was the most competitive and the score showed it as the Patriots lost 22-25. The Patriots got down early 7-12 but were able to bring it within one at 11-12. The teams battled all the way down to the end when GW junior Landon Garvik ended the match with her seventh kill of the game. Mason committed a match low seven errors in the last set but was ultimately not able to get the job done.
Sophomore Morghan Martin and senior Lana Zonjic led the way for the Patriots with twelve and ten kills respectively. Senior Tori Price had a good game and led with 26 assists. The Patriots committed 24 total errors while GW committed 16, which was the contributing factor in the loss for Mason.
The Colonials completed a season sweep of the Patriots and earned another point in the Revolutionary Rivalry towards the Tri-Corner Hat Trophy.
Mason’s next match is against Duquesne on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the RAC.
